The Sori?Harengan are a small indigenous people group living in Manus Province, Papua New Guinea. Their communities are found on Sori and Harengan islands off the northwestern coast of Manus Island, a large island in the Bismarck Archipelago known for its many small island groups. Their identity is rooted in local land, family, and community traditions passed down by word of mouth rather than written history. The people and their language share the same name, reflecting how closely tied language and identity are in their culture.
The Sori?Harengan live in small coastal and island villages where everyday life is shaped by the sea and the natural environment. Fishing and small?scale gardening provide most of their food, with gardens yielding root crops, bananas, and other local staples. Travel between their home islands and nearby settlements is often by canoe or small boat, since waterways are the main transportation routes in this part of Manus Province.
Homes are constructed from materials gathered locally, and extended family networks form the social framework of village life. Their traditional language is used within the community, although broader regional languages such as Tok Pisin may also be used when communicating with people from outside their group. The Sori?Harengan language belongs to the Oceanic branch of the Austronesian family, one of several Manus languages spoken in this maritime region.
Most Sori?Harengan identify with Christianity, with worship and church life embedded in local practice. At the same time, indigenous spiritual beliefs linked to ancestor influence, natural forces, and traditional practices continue to shape how many people understand and engage with spiritual realities. These traditional beliefs often coexist with Christian expressions, creating a blended religious landscape rather than one firmly grounded in biblical teaching.
Scripture access in their language is currently limited. Translation efforts have started, but no full Bible or New Testament is yet available in Sori?Harengan. This means that the community must often rely on Scripture in other languages or incomplete portions of the Bible, which can hinder deep engagement with the whole counsel of God's Word.
The primary need among the Sori?Harengan is clear and faithful presentation of the gospel that leads to genuine conversion and spiritual growth. While Christianity is widely practiced, many still need deeper understanding of the biblical message beyond cultural or traditional forms of belief.
A critical need is the translation and distribution of Scripture in the Sori?Harengan language. With only early translation work begun, availability of a complete Bible would strengthen personal devotion, discipleship, and local church maturity.
Practical challenges also shape everyday life. Their coastal island setting means limited access to formal healthcare, education, and infrastructure, and travel beyond their immediate area requires boats and favorable conditions. Improved access to these services would support both physical well?being and opportunities for sustained community development.
There is also a need for faithful local leaders who are grounded in Scripture and equipped to teach, disciple, and guide believers toward a robust, biblically rooted faith.
Pray that the Sori?Harengan would come to a clear and saving faith in Jesus Christ, with hearts rooted in Scripture rather than cultural or blended belief systems.
Pray for Bible translation and scripture availability in the Sori?Harengan language so that God's Word can be understood directly and fully by the community.
Pray for the raising up of faithful, scripture?centered leaders from within their community who can disciple others with clarity and compassion.
Pray that traditional spiritual beliefs would be replaced with a firm trust in the truth of God's Word and the person of Christ.
Pray for improved access to education, healthcare, and transportation that supports daily life and opens opportunities for long?term growth.
Pray that the gospel would spread deeply through families and villages, bringing lasting transformation and vibrant church life among the Sori?Harengan.
