Introduction / History

The Siar in PNG are an indigenous people group living in the Madang Province of Papua New Guinea, especially in coastal and lowland areas near Astrolabe Bay. Their homeland includes a mix of rainforest, rivers, and tidal flats, where communities have lived in close connection with both land and sea for generations.

The Siar speak the Siar language, part of the Trans–New Guinea language family within the Madang subgroup. This places them among a broader network of inland and coastal peoples in the region who share linguistic ties while maintaining distinct local identities.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life among the Siar is shaped by a tropical environment where fishing, gardening, and use of natural resources are central to daily living. Many families maintain gardens that produce staple crops, and rivers and coastal waters provide fish and other food sources.

Communities are typically organized into villages where extended family and clan relationships play an important role in social life and cooperation. Homes are often constructed from locally available materials, and daily routines involve shared work such as tending gardens, preparing food, caring for children, and maintaining community life.

Multilingualism is common. While the Siar language remains central to identity and communication within the community, broader trade languages such as Tok Pisin are often used for interaction with neighboring groups or in markets and schools.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Siar are largely identified with Christianity, and the gospel has had a meaningful presence among them. Christian teaching, church gatherings, and worship play significant roles in shaping community values and regular life. Some divide their faith between Jesus Christ and the spirits their ancestors worshipped. Portions of Scripture, including the New Testament, are available in the Siar language, providing them answers to spiritual questions.

What Are Their Needs?

There is a continuing need for deeper discipleship and clear biblical teaching so that Siar believers are firmly grounded in Scripture. Greater access to the full Bible in their language would further strengthen the church and support spiritual maturity.

Equipping local leaders with sound doctrine and teaching skills is essential so pastors, teachers, and lay leaders can guide their communities effectively. Strong leadership strengthens both spiritual growth and practical community life.

Because many Siar communities are in rural and sometimes remote settings, practical challenges such as limited access to education, transportation, and resources can affect both daily living and ministry opportunities. Addressing both spiritual and practical needs helps support long-term growth.

Prayer Items

Pray that Siar churches would be overwhelmed by the power and goodness of the Holy Spirit.
Pray for local church leaders to be well equipped with sound doctrine and strengthened in their ministry.
Pray that families will be rooted in biblical truth and that younger generations will follow Christ with conviction.
Pray for increased access to Scripture and for continued translation and distribution where needed.
Pray that Siar Christians will be sent out to the nations.
