Introduction / History

The Seim are a small ethnic group living in the East Sepik region of Papua New Guinea. Historically, they have maintained strong connections to their land, speaking the Mende language and preserving local customs. Their communities have long relied on subsistence farming and river-based trade, and they have resisted outside influences until the arrival of missionaries in the 20th century.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Seim families live in close-knit villages where extended families often share homes. Men typically hunt, fish, and tend gardens, while women manage household tasks and care for children. Pigs hold cultural significance and are raised for feasts and ceremonies. Celebrations often include singing, dancing, and sharing traditional foods such as sago, yam, and fish. Life revolves around community cooperation, respect for elders, and seasonal cycles of planting and harvesting.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Traditional Seim beliefs include ancestor reverence, spirit protection, and ritual observances tied to the land and river. Christianity has reached parts of their population, yet many combine local customs with new faith practices. Prayer, offerings, and ritual dancing remain central, while a growing number of believers are exploring Jesus Christ as the source of life and hope. Mission engagement is limited, and access to discipleship resources is scarce.

What Are Their Needs?

The Seim face isolation from the broader Christian community and limited access to Scripture in their language. Relationships between villages are often cautious, so introducing the gospel requires patient, respectful engagement. Spiritual guidance, literacy in local and national languages, and healthcare support would strengthen both individual and community resilience. Partnerships with believers who live out Christ's love can help them see the hope available in Him.

Prayer Items

Pray that Seim believers will grow in faith and become active participants in sharing the gospel.
Pray for protection over families, health for children and elders, and sustainable food sources.
Pray asking God to provide teachers, pastors, and discipleship workers who will equip the Seim to integrate the message of Jesus into daily life.
Pray that the barriers of distance, language, and traditional beliefs will be softened for the gospel to take deep root.
Pray for the faithful translation and wide distribution of the Scriptures, evangelism resources, and discipleship materials in the Mende language.
