Introduction / History

The Nembao are an indigenous people group of the Solomon Islands, living on Nendö (also spelled Nendo or Ndeni) Island in Temotu Province, the easternmost province of the archipelago. Their identity has been shaped over generations through village life, kinship, and ties to land and sea rather than written historical records. Their language, Nembao, belongs to the Oceanic branch of the Austronesian language family, reflecting deep cultural connections with neighboring island groups across the region while remaining distinctive to their own community.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Nembao communities are typically small and rural, set in coastal and inland village settlements where daily life revolves around subsistence activities, family cooperation, and local custom. Gardens planted with root crops such as taro, yam, and cassava, as well as bananas, coconuts, and other fruits, provide staple foods. Fishing from coastal waters and gathering from nearby forests supplement their diets.

Homes are constructed from locally available materials, and extended families often live near one another, helping sustain social cohesion and mutual support. Their language is used for everyday communication within the community, while English or regional Solomon Islands trade languages may be used when interacting with people from other areas. Access to healthcare, formal education, and larger markets requires travel to towns and centers beyond Nendö Island.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Nembao people identify with Christianity, and church life plays a significant role in community gatherings, worship, and shared rhythms of life. Christian teaching and practice are woven into many aspects of daily life.

At the same time, traditional spiritual beliefs connected to ancestors, the natural environment, and customary practices continue to shape how some individuals understand spiritual realities. These traditional influences often coexist with Christian forms of worship rather than being fully replaced by them, resulting in a spiritual landscape that blends customary expressions with Christian practice.

There is no confirmed complete Bible translation in the Nembao language, and Scripture portions remain limited. This means that access to the full message of God's Word in the language spoken most within the community is constrained, highlighting a need for broader Scripture availability.

What Are Their Needs?

The Nembao need clear and faithful teaching of the gospel that leads to deep, personal faith in Jesus Christ rather than a surface or cultural form of Christianity. Deeper discipleship rooted in Scripture is essential for spiritual maturity within their communities.

A significant need is Bible translation and Scripture access in the Nembao language. With no complete Bible yet available in their language and limited Scripture portions, access to the full counsel of God's Word remains restricted. Expanded translation and distribution efforts would support sustained discipleship and spiritual growth.

There is also a need for faithful, biblically grounded local leaders who can teach Scripture clearly, disciple believers, and guide their communities toward a faith shaped by biblical truth rather than mixed belief systems.

Practical challenges affect daily life as well. Limited access to healthcare, education, and transportation can hinder both physical well?being and opportunities for sustained church growth and community development.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Nembao would come to a clear and saving faith in Jesus Christ, grounded firmly in Scripture rather than surface cultural forms of religion.
Pray for Bible translation and Scripture distribution in the Nembao language so that God's Word becomes fully accessible and understandable in the language the community uses daily.
Pray for the raising up of faithful, Scripture?centered local leaders who can teach, disciple, and shepherd others effectively.
Pray that traditional spiritual influences would yield to a deep trust in the truth of God's Word.
Pray for improved access to healthcare, education, and transportation that supports everyday life and community growth.
Pray that the gospel would spread throughout homes and villages, bringing lasting transformation among the Nembao.
