Introduction / History

The Pahi or Lugitama people are an indigenous tribe of northwest Papua New Guinea, living in the Gulf Province. Their history dates back to pre-colonial times, and they have a complex culture that is deeply connected to their land and their ancestors. The Pahi people have a unique history that has been shaped by their interactions with neighboring tribes and colonial powers. They were known for their skill in trading and were sought after by other tribes for their goods. However, their interactions with the colonial powers also led to their exploitation and marginalization.

The Pahi speak their own language of Pahi. Most also speak the trade language of Tok Pisin. Audio Recordings are available in Pahi. Only about one in five adults have the literacy skills necessary to read the Bible.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The lifestyle of the Pahi people is centered around subsistence farming and fishing. They grow crops such as sweet potatoes, yams and bananas, which they use to feed themselves and their families. They also fish in the nearby rivers and streams and hunt in the surrounding forests. The Pahi people have a strong tradition of communal living, and they often work together on community projects, such as building houses or clearing land for crops.

In addition to their subsistence activities, the Pahi people have a tradition of craft-making. They create intricate baskets, mats and carvings from materials such as bamboo, palm trees, and wood. These crafts are often sold or traded with neighboring tribes and provide the Pahi people with additional sources of income.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The vast majority of the Pahi claim to be followers of Jesus Christ. The brand of Christianity is influenced by folk religion and ancestor veneration. The Pahi people have a unique traditional religious belief system that is based on animism. They believe that the natural world is inhabited by spirits and deities, and that these spirits play an important role in their lives. They also believe in the power of ancestral spirits. They honor their ancestors through rituals and ceremonies.

What Are Their Needs?

The Pahi have spiritual and physical needs. They would greatly benefit by having access to modern medicine. Medical care is often hours away. Solar panels can bring electricity to the Pahi. The Pahi need schools for their children. Most of all, the Pahi believers need to grow in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ.

Prayer Points

Ask the Lord to send medical teams to the Pahi.

Pray that schools are established among the Pahi.

Pray the Lord raises up Pahi pastors who know and can teach the Bible.

Pray that the Bible will soon be available in the Pahi language.
