The Likouala Kwala are a Bantu riverine people living along the Likouala, Sangha, and Congo rivers in northern Republic of the Congo. Also called Likouala or Ekwala, they have long depended on waterways for trade, fishing, and travel, shaping a culture centered on rivers and forests. Their language is called Likwala.
Most families fish, trade, build boats, and farm cassava, maize, and plantains. Villages are built on raised ground to avoid flooding. Extended families are important, polygyny is common, and social life centers on community celebrations, music, storytelling, and shared meals of fish, smoked meats, leafy stews, and starchy staples.
Many identify as Christian, mainly Catholic or Protestant, yet traditional beliefs in spirits, ancestors, and healing practices remain influential. The Bible is not yet translated into Likwala, and access to Scripture and media is limited.
Clear Scripture in their heart language, consistent discipleship, and trained local believers are essential for deep spiritual growth. Improved healthcare, education, and clean water would greatly strengthen families and communities.
Pray for a faithful translation and wide distribution of the Scriptures, evangelism materials, and discipleship resources in the Likwala language. P
ray that the Likouala Kwala Christians would lead their communities for God's glory, preach the gospel, teach the Bible, plant churches, and make disciples of their own nation and beyond.
Pray asking God to provide medical care, education, and sustainable livelihoods.
