The Helong are an ethnic group living primarily on the western part of Timor Island and nearby coastal areas, including villages around Kupang, in eastern Indonesia. They are one of the indigenous peoples of Timor, with a long history rooted in coastal settlement, seafaring, and interaction with neighboring Timorese groups. Traditionally, Helong society has been organized around clans and governed by customary law (adat), which regulates land ownership, marriage, and social responsibilities.
