Introduction / History

The Gonja people are located in the northern part of Ghana, and wealth is concentrated in the southern half of the country.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most people in northern Ghana live off subsistence farming beside mud-brick, thatched-roof structures. Family incomes are often so low that children stay home to work fields rather than attend school. Poverty is the rule in this part of Ghana. They don't have enough water, food or jobs. The literacy rate of the Gonja is less than 10%.

What Are Their Beliefs?

More than half of the Gonja people identify as Muslims. There is a small Christian minority. Almost all of Gonja people also adhere to traditional religious practices.

What Are Their Needs?

The very low literacy rate of the Gonja people largely requires an oral presentation of the gospel, both for evangelism and discipleship purposes. Communicating with stories from scripture will be useful and probably effective. Recordings and videos will also be helpful.

Prayer Points

Pray that the 2020s will be a decade where there is an increase in literacy among the Gonja people.
Pray for the few Gonja believers to be discipled and sent out to those who need the gospel.
Pray for educational opportunities and for good farming methods.
Pray they will soon escape the bonds of poverty and illiteracy.
