The Gebe and Umera peoples represent Indonesia's Papuan heritage outside Papua. They are culturally distinct from most western Indonesian groups. They both speak endangered Papuan languages with small, marginalized populations. Historically animistic with worldviews in which there is a spiritual presence in nature including animals. The desire is for harmony between humans, spirits, land and sea. The Gebe live on Gebe Island where as the Umera live in coastal clan based villages.
Gebe livelihood depends on fishing, sage, and gardening whereas, the Umera garden, hunt and fish. They harvest coconut and sago along with maintaining small gardens. Income is generated from selling fish, wage labor and seasonal work outside the village. Coconut-based dished, fish, sago, cassava and rice are staples. The Umera though fisherman, are also hunters. Bananas, sweet potato, taro, and cassava are staples.
Homes are small, simple, and usually wooden. Community revolves around helping each other, sharing fish, food, and labor.
Christian expression differs as Gebe church like is closely tied to fishing cycles and island life, Umera is more land focused with greater emphasis on clan and ancestral land and stronger elder leadership. Christianity is widely accepted by both, but they filter it through an animistic worldview. Ancestors remain important to identity and moral order. Harmony between humans, nature, and the unseen world is essential. Faith is communal not individual. Ancestors are seen as guardians. Both adhere to Adat which is a form of elder leadership. The Gebe emphasizes God's protection, gratitude for daily provision and community survival. Umera emphasizes order, obedience, and moral boundaries. Faith is closely tied to land stewardship and clan responsibility.
The most critical needs for the Gebe is protection of fishing grounds, and coastal areas. For the Umera it is protection of ancestral land and forests. Threats from logging, mining, and land encroachment. Loss of land or sea means loss of food, identity, and spiritual security.
Pray that their lands will be protected from exploitation.
Pray for a Bible translation in their mother tongue.
Pray that they will have courage to share their faith with others in daily conversations.
Pray that they will have a heart after God and a longing to him personally.
Pray that soon, Gebe disciples will make disciples among ethnic groups that don't yet put their trust in the finished work of Christ.
