Introduction / History

The Dugwor people live in the Far North region of Cameroon, where they have maintained their unique language, Dugwor, which is part of the Chadic language family. Their history is deeply rooted in the region, shaped by centuries of adaptation to the Sahelian environment and interaction with neighboring ethnic groups. The Dugwor have preserved their cultural identity through oral traditions, storytelling, and the passing down of customs from one generation to the next.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life among the Dugwor centers on subsistence agriculture and animal husbandry. Families work together to cultivate crops such as millet, sorghum, and maize, which form the basis of their diet. Livestock, especially goats and cattle, are important for both food and economic security. Daily routines are shaped by the rhythms of the seasons, with planting and harvest times bringing the community together in shared labor. Dugwor families are typically extended, with several generations living in close proximity and supporting one another. Social life is enriched by traditional music, dance, and festivals, which provide opportunities for communal celebration and the reinforcement of cultural values.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Dugwor people primarily follow Islam, but they mix it with traditional African religion. Many of their beliefs center on the veneration of ancestors and the spiritual forces believed to influence health, fertility, and protection. Rituals and ceremonies are conducted to honor these spiritual realities and seek blessings for the community. There is a small church among them, but they are in the minority.

What Are Their Needs?

Access to clean water, healthcare, and education remains a significant challenge for the Dugwor, especially in remote villages. Many families struggle with food insecurity due to unpredictable weather and limited agricultural resources. Spiritually, the Dugwor have little access to the gospel in their own language, and few have heard the message of Jesus Christ. There is a great need for workers who can share the hope of Christ in culturally sensitive ways, as well as for the translation and distribution of Scripture and Christian resources. Only through the mercy of Jesus Christ can true spiritual transformation come to the Dugwor people.

Prayer Items

Pray that the Dugwor will experience improved access to clean water, healthcare, and education, so that their families can thrive.
Ask God to send workers who are equipped to share the gospel in the Dugwor language and culture, bringing the message of Jesus Christ to those who have never heard.
Pray for the translation and distribution of Scripture and Christian materials, so that the Dugwor can encounter the truth of God's Word in their own language.
Intercede for open hearts among the Dugwor, that they may respond to the love and mercy of Jesus Christ and become part of the global discipleship force.
