Introduction / History

The Buli people live in Maluku Utara Province on the island of Halmahera, mainly around Buli Bay on the north shore. They speak the Buli language, which is part of the Austronesian family. Historically, the Buli have been influenced by waves of migration and trade in the Maluku Islands, known for their spice trade. Islam came through traders centuries ago, and today it shapes much of their identity. Despite outside influences, the Buli maintain their own language and cultural traditions.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Buli live in small coastal villages surrounded by tropical forests and the sea. Fishing and small-scale farming are the main sources of income. Men often fish or work in coconut and clove plantations, while women tend gardens and care for the home. Families are close-knit, and extended relatives often live nearby. Respect for elders is strong, and decisions are usually made collectively.

Celebrations include weddings and Islamic holidays, which bring the community together for feasts and music. Rice is the staple food, often served with fish and vegetables. Coconut-based dishes and sago are common. Life is simple but deeply communal, with neighbors helping each other during planting, harvesting, and building homes.

What Are Their Beliefs?

About two-thirds of the Buli people follow Islam, which influences daily life through prayer, fasting during Ramadan, and mosque attendance. Islamic traditions mix with local customs, such as community gatherings and respect for ancestral heritage. A minority identify as Christians, but few have a strong evangelical faith. The gospel has reached some, yet many still lack a clear understanding of salvation through Jesus Christ.

What Are Their Needs?

The Buli need better access to healthcare and education, as their villages are remote and resources are limited. Economic opportunities are scarce, and many families struggle with poverty. Spiritually, most have never experienced the transforming power of Christ. Even among those who identify as Christian, there is a need for biblical teaching and discipleship. Entire communities need to see that Jesus offers forgiveness, hope, and eternal life.
