Introduction / History

The Bulango people live in Gorontalo Province on the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia. Their language, Bulango, belongs to the Austronesian family and is part of the Gorontalo-Mongondow group. Historically, the Bulango were farmers and fishermen who lived in small villages near rivers and coastal areas. They have a rich oral tradition and cultural heritage tied to agriculture and community life. Over time, outside influences such as trade and government programs have introduced modern education and infrastructure, but traditional customs remain strong.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Bulango live in rural communities where farming is the main occupation. Rice is the primary crop, and families also grow corn, vegetables, and coconuts. Men often work in agriculture or fishing, while women manage household tasks and help in the fields.

Families are close-knit, and extended relatives often live nearby. Community life is important, with cooperation during planting and harvest seasons. Celebrations include weddings, harvest festivals, and Islamic holidays, often marked by traditional music and dance. Meals are centered on rice, fish, and vegetables, with coconut and spices adding flavor.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Bulango people identify as Muslims, following Islamic practices in daily life. Religious traditions shape family and community activities, and mosques serve as centers for worship and social gatherings. While Islam is dominant, there is little exposure to the gospel, and most have never heard a clear presentation of Jesus Christ as Savior. Spiritual openness exists in some areas, but there are significant barriers due to cultural and religious identity.

What Are Their Needs?

Access to quality education and healthcare is limited in rural areas, and economic opportunities are scarce. Many families depend on subsistence farming and fishing, which makes them vulnerable to natural disasters and market fluctuations. Roads and infrastructure are underdeveloped, making travel and trade difficult. Spiritually, the Bulango need workers who will share the good news of Jesus Christ with love and humility.

Prayer Items

Pray for workers who will bring the gospel to the Bulango people and demonstrate Christ's love in practical ways.
Ask God to bless efforts to translate and distribute Scripture in the Bulango language.
Pray for improved education and healthcare so families can thrive physically and socially.
Intercede for hearts to be open to Jesus Christ and for future believers to become part of the global mission force.
