Introduction / History

The Bengoi people live in the interior of Southeast Kalimantan, Indonesia. They speak the Bengoi language, which belongs to the Austronesian family and is part of the Dayak linguistic cluster. Historically, the Bengoi were forest dwellers who practiced shifting cultivation and relied on hunting and gathering. Their communities developed along rivers and forested areas, maintaining a strong connection to nature. Over time, outside influences such as trade and limited government contact introduced modern elements, but the Bengoi still preserve many traditional customs and oral traditions.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Bengoi live in small villages surrounded by dense forests. Farming is their main occupation, with rice and vegetables grown for family use. Hunting and fishing supplement their diet, and forest products are gathered for food and trade. Houses are typically wooden and built on stilts to protect against flooding. Families are close-knit, and extended relatives often live nearby. Community cooperation is important during planting, harvesting, weddings, and funerals. Celebrations include traditional music and dance, and meals feature rice as the staple food, accompanied by vegetables, fish, and occasionally meat for special occasions.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Bengoi traditionally practiced animism, with rituals focused on spirits of nature and ancestors. Today, many identify as Christians, with Protestant and Catholic traditions present among them. While the gospel has reached their communities, spiritual understanding is often shallow, and some traditional customs remain part of social life.

What Are Their Needs?

Education and healthcare are limited because of their remote location. Economic opportunities are few, and families depend on subsistence farming. Roads and infrastructure are poor, making travel and trade difficult. Spiritually, the Bengoi need strong local leaders and teaching that will help churches grow in biblical faith. Scripture translation in the Benggoi language is far from complete.

Prayer Items

Pray for accurate biblical materials in the Benggoi language that will be spread far and wide.
