Introduction / History

The Baso are an ethnic group living in the Sulawesi region of Indonesia. Their language, Baso, is part of the Austronesian language family and is closely related to other local languages in the area. What Are Their Lives Like?

The Baso people primarily live in rural villages, where agriculture is the main source of livelihood. Families work together to cultivate rice, corn, and vegetables, and some also raise livestock such as chickens and goats. Fishing and gathering forest products supplement their diet. Meals are typically centered around rice, with fish, vegetables, and local spices adding flavor. Family life is important, with extended families often living close together and sharing daily responsibilities. Community celebrations are significant, especially during harvests, weddings, and religious festivals. These events are marked by traditional music, dance, and communal feasts, which help to strengthen social bonds.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Baso people are primarily Christian, but traditional beliefs and customs are blended with Christian practices, especially in ceremonies related to agriculture and family life. Some are Muslim like the Indonesian majority.

What Are Their Needs?
