Yong in Thailand
The Yong reside in scattered parts of northern Thailand and are said to have originally come from Shan State, Myanmar. The largest influx of Yongs occurred in 1805, when 10,000 people were taken from Shan State to be resettled in northern Thailand. Although Buddhism is the chosen religion of the Yong, their beliefs are heavily influenced by animistic rituals and spirit worship. The Yongs honor the spirit of the land and the ancestral spirits and believe in many other spirits. On the full moon in June, the villagers flock to the local spirit shrine to make sacrifices of pig heads, chicken, and nine different kinds of fruit. The Yong use both their own Yong language and the Thai language.

The main need of the Yong is the spiritual discernment and a desire to find truth. They are content with spiritual lives that lead them on the broad road to destruction.
