Ghanchi (Muslim traditions) in India
By tradition, Ghanchi manufacture cooking oil. They accompanied the Mongols during their invasion to supply the army with oil. They later came to live in Gujarat, though many now live in Rajasthan and the city of Mumbai. The Ghanchi name supposedly came from "ghanch" meaning a traditional oil pressing machine. They press the cooking oil from seeds. Some work in agriculture. Many have become businessmen and work in transportation. Ghanchi Muslims are a close community, marrying near relatives. In Mumbai, the Kadiwal Muslim Ghanchi Community Hall serves as a gathering place for the Ghanchi community. They have a caste association.
Ministry Obstacles There are probably few or no Christians among this Muslim people group. They will have to hear the gospel from someone outside their community.
Scripture Focus "Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation." Psalm 68:5
Scripture Prayer May the widows and orphans among this people group become part of His family.
Prayer Focus Pray that believers will go to the Muslim Ghanchi in friendship and love and earn the privilege to give them the gospel message.
Pray that existing Indian churches will produce many disciples among the Ghanchi.
Pray for Ghanchi elders and religious leaders to have dreams of the risen and victorious Christ.
