Introduction / History

The Tonocote people are the original inhabitants of the Argentine provinces of Santiago del Estero and Tucum n. Before Spanish colonial times, they were hunters, food gatherers, fishermen and farmers. The powerful Quechuas largely influenced their culture. In fact, to this day, their language, Santiago del Estero Quichua, is one of the Quichua dialects. Some Tonocote land was taken by the Quichuas a few years before the Spanish took hold of what is today Argentina.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Tonocotes are usually mixed with other tribes and White Argentines. Some retain their language, but Spanish is the language of trade.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most are Roman Catholic. Native Americans tend to cling to elements of their ancient religions as a way to retain their culture.

What Are Their Needs?

The Tonocotes need to put all their hope and identity in Jesus Christ, the only one who offers life to the full.

Prayer Points

Pray for Tonocote family leaders to find their way to the cross and disciple others to do the same.
Pray for a spiritual hunger that will not be satisfied until they stand with Jesus no matter what the cost.
Pray for Tonocote disciples who will make more disciples.
