The Patti Govigama are a subgroup of the Sinhalese Govigama caste, historically linked to rice farming and landholding. They were part of the traditional agrarian structure under the Kandyan kingdom. Most Patti Govigama families live in rural villages, though many younger members work in cities in government or private sectors. Family ties are strong, and respect for elders is highly valued. Major celebrations include Vesak and Sinhala New Year, marked by rituals, games, and sharing sweets like kavum and kokis. Meals typically feature rice with vegetable curries and fish. Education is important, and parents encourage children to pursue higher studies for better opportunities.

The Patti Govigama follow Theravada Buddhism, emphasizing the teachings of the Buddha, meditation, and merit-making through temple offerings and acts of generosity. Temples serve as spiritual and social centers. Astrology and folk traditions often influence decisions about marriage and other life events.

What Are Their Needs?

Economic changes and urban migration have created challenges for rural communities, including limited access to healthcare and quality education. Spiritually, most have never heard a clear presentation of the gospel, and there are few believers among them who can share Christ's love in culturally relevant ways.
