Introduction / History

In earlier times the Yadav were called Ahir. In most places they don't use the name Ahir anymore and the most common name is Yadav or Yadava. The name Ahir is derived from 'Abhira ', which is an immigrant tribe found in inscriptions and Hindu sacred books. The Abhira appear to have been one of the immigrant tribes from Central Asia. The Hindus among them claim connection to the god Krishna, since he was a herdsman.

Most Yadav people remain Hindu, but a smaller, lesser-known community of them are Muslim. Most likely, they converted to Islam during the 300-year period when Muslim empires controlled the Subcontinent and conversion was politically expedient.

Where Are they Located?

Almost all of the Gola Yadav people live in India, but there are small pockets of them in Pakistan and Nepal.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Gola Yadav are a Hindu caste comprising of dairymen, cattle producers, and laborers. Their traditional occupation is animal husbandry and selling its products. The Yadav consist of both landowning and landless people. Some Yadav are businessmen, teachers, doctors, engineers and political leaders.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most Yadavs are Hindus, especially in India and Nepal where Hindus are the majority. They identify with Krishna, because they view him as a dairyman like themselves. Their status is a strange mix of low caste because they often do manual work, and high status because they deal with "sacred" cows.

What Are Their Needs?

The Gola Yadavs need to know what Jesus Christ can do for their families and communities. It will be very difficult for them to do that, since they live in some of the most remote parts of South Asia.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Holy Spirit to move among Gola Yadav family and community leaders to seek His face.
Pray for the Lord to thrust out workers who will be compelled to see a disciple making movement among the Yadav people in Nepal.
Pray for Gola Yadav leaders to embrace the blessings that their community can enjoy by being part of Christ's kingdom.
