Introduction / History

The Bauzi people live in the lowland rainforests of Papua, Indonesia, primarily along the banks of the Mamberamo River. They speak the Bauzi language, which is part of the Lakes Plain language family and is unique to their community. For generations, the Bauzi have maintained a semi-nomadic lifestyle, moving between forest camps and river settlements. Their history is marked by a strong connection to the land and a reliance on oral tradition to pass down stories, customs, and knowledge from one generation to the next. In recent decades, the Bauzi have experienced increased contact with the outside world, including the arrival of missionaries and government programs.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The daily life of the Bauzi people centers on subsistence activities such as hunting, fishing, and gathering wild plants. Men often hunt wild pigs, birds, and other animals using bows and arrows, while women gather sago, fruits, and edible plants from the forest. Fishing in the rivers provides an important source of protein. The Bauzi live in small, close-knit villages, with extended families sharing communal longhouses. Meals are simple and based on what is available from the forest and river, with sago as a staple food. Family and community bonds are strong, and important events such as marriages, births, and traditional ceremonies are celebrated together. Storytelling, music, and dance play a significant role in preserving Bauzi culture and identity.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Bauzi people were traditionally animistic, believing that spirits inhabited the natural world and influenced daily life. Rituals and ceremonies were performed to appease these spirits and seek their protection. In recent years, many Bauzi have come to faith in Jesus Christ, and Christianity now shapes much of their community life. Church gatherings, prayer, and the reading of Scripture have become important aspects of daily life for many Bauzi. However, some traditional beliefs and practices may still be present, especially in more remote areas.

What Are Their Needs?

Many Bauzi communities face challenges related to limited access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Preventable diseases and malnutrition are ongoing concerns, and children often have few opportunities for formal schooling. While the gospel has reached many Bauzi, there is a need for continued discipleship, leadership development, and spiritual growth. The Bauzi also require support and resources to address both their physical and spiritual needs, trusting in the mercy and provision of Jesus Christ.

Prayer Points

Pray that the Bauzi people would experience improved access to education, healthcare, and resources for daily living.
Ask God to strengthen the faith of Bauzi believers and raise up mature leaders who can disciple others in their communities.
Pray for spiritual renewal and unity among Bauzi Christians, so that they may be a light to their neighbors and beyond.
Pray that the Bauzi would become active participants in the global body of Christ, sharing the hope of the gospel with other peoples.
