Introduction / History

The Padannan are a Scheduled Caste living in Kerala. They migrated from Tamil Nadu. They speak Tamil and Malayalam and they read and write in Malayalam. They are not vegetarians who eat rice as a cereal. Hinduism is their religion.

The Padannan prefer marriages between cousin. On the death of the father, sons usually inherit the property. The women help with economic and other matters.

The Padannan work in boating, fishing, agriculture, laboring and other work. They educate their children to college level. They use modern and traditional medicines. They make use of family planning. They are one of four sub groups of the Kanakkan.
