Introduction / History

The Berad speak Telugu, Kannada and Hindi and read and write in Devanagari.

They live in Maharashtra, a state in western India.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Barahar work as cultivators and in agriculture, as laborers and in small businesses. They make their living from the land and forest but are no longer hunters. They are vegetarians who eat rice.

The Barahar marry young, girls at twelve, boys at eighteen. They allow for divorce, which is usually initiated by the husband. On the death of the father, the sons inherit the property. Women help with activities including rituals.

They are Hindus who worship Shiva.
