Introduction / History

The Pulayan are a scheduled caste. They are among those with the lowest status in Hindu society. The Pulayan in Kerala speak, read and write in Malayalam. The Pulayan in Tamil Nadu speak Tamil.

What Are Their Lives Like?

They are mostly landless agricultural workers. Some of them make baskets and other crafts. They are famous for their music and dance. They often marry their cousins. Marriage is either by mutual consent or it's arranged by family leaders. The groom's family pays a dowry to the bride's family.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Hinduism is their religion.

What Are Their Needs?

They need to accept the blessings of Jesus Christ, the one who came to offer "life to the full."
