An alternative name for the Momna is Momin, which in Arabic means a true follower of the faith. The Muslim Momna were Hindus before conversion to Islam. Some are now Sunni Muslim and others are Shia, which has created a rift within the community. To make the rift even worse, there is also a Wahabi group of Momna. These three religious subdivisions generally live in three different locations. People do not often marry across these subdivision lines. The three religious subdivisions are in turn made up of several clans. Most Momna are farmers. They have their own caste association which governs the community.
Hindu extremist groups in Gujarat (where most Momna people live) have pursued a campaign of "intimidation, slander and harassment of Muslims and Christians in Dalit and tribal groups". An anti-conversion law was passed in 2003.
Please pray young people in this people group will be lead to Christian content on the internet, and that they will be interested in it, and will be given understanding.
There has been no indication of any Christians among the Momna people, in either India or Pakistan. If there are secret believers they need our prayer support.
Please pray for peaceful relations between the Sunni, Shia, and Wahabi sects wtihin this people group.
