Introduction / History

The Mawasi are a Scheduled Caste which gives them mid-level status. They speak Hindi and read and write in Devanagari. They live in the hills of Madhya Pradesh in India.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Mawasi are cultivators and agricultural laborers. Some of them hunt. Younger ones have become day laborers. They have councils to look after their needs. Their literacy level is low, so the gospel will need to be given in oral form. The Mawasi are not vegetarians but do not eat beef. They often use mustard oil for cooking. They drink milk and tea. They smoke beedis which is a South Asian cigarette. There are a number of clans among them. They arrange marriages after discussions between family leaders.

What Are Their Beliefs?

They are officially Hindu, though they also have their own beliefs blended in.

What Are Their Needs?

The Mawasi people need a relationship with God the Father so He can guide them through life's challenges.

Prayer Points

Pray for intercessors and workers to reach them for Christ. Pray for spiritual discernment and openness to the claims of Jesus Christ. Pray that the council leaders will open their community to follow the Lord as a group.
