Introduction / History

The Kayastha or Karan of India has its origins from a word meaning writer or scribe, which is their traditional occupation. They are not vegetarians.

In Orissa, the Kayastha live in Cuttack and other regions. They speak, read and write in Oriya. They have cross-cousin marriages. A dowry is given. Divorce and marrying again is allowed. Widows can marry again. They work mainly in agriculture and most are landowners. Hinduism is their religion. They have a good literacy level and use modern medicines and family planning.

In West Bengal, the Kayastha are mainly in the Midnapur district. They speak, read and write in Bengali.

In Bihar they speak Maithili and Hindi and read and write in Devanagari. Divorce is not allowed but a man can marry again if his wife cannot have children.

Prayer Points

* Pray that gospel materials will bring the Kayastha to Jesus Christ.
* Pray that Indian Christians will help lead them to Jesus Christ too.
