Introduction / History

Traditionally the Kadar people were hunters and gatherers. The Kadar people live in Kerala.

What Are Their Lives Like?

They still live much like their tribal ancestors. According to Britannica, most live in the forest and gather forest goods to sell such as cardamom, ginger, sago, wax, and wild honey. Typically, they sell or trade these for rice, their staple food. Their homes have thatched roofs from large palm leaves. A few are agricultural laborers. They have a caste council to judge matters for them. They are not well educated so the gospel will need to be given in oral form. The Kadar prefer adult marriages. The divorced and bereaved are allowed to marry again.

Hinduism is their official religion, but they are more likely to worship their traditional jungle spirits.
