Introduction / History

The Ghanchi name has to do with oil pressing, which is their traditional work. They belong to a caste which gives them good status in Hindu society. The majority live in Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, though they also live in other parts of India. They speak, read and write in Gujarati, a language that has many gospel materials.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Many work as day laborers or in small businesses. Some still work as oil pressers.

The community allows divorce and remarriage. Upon the death of the father, sons inherit the property. The oldest son takes charge of the home. Unlike most Hindu communities, the Ghanchi people bury their dead.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Their desire for high status and the fact that few Christ followers are in their part of India can keep them from embracing the only Savior.

What Are Their Needs?

Pray for faithful workers to go to them with the heart-transforming gospel. Pray that the Ghanchi would be attracted to Jesus, read the Bible and give their lives to Jesus Christ. Pray that gospel recordings and the JESUS Film would help them to begin their own church planting movement.
