Introduction / History

The Chaptegar people probably migrated from Goa to Karnataka. The Chaptegar in Karnataka speak Konkani, the language of Goa, and read and write in Kannada.

What Are Their Lives Like?

They work in carpentry, government work, day laboring, and other work. The Chaptegar in Kerala work producing parched and beaten rice. Some of them work in agriculture. They are not vegetarians and like to eat fish and rice. They prefer marriages between cousins.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Chaptegar people practice Hinduism, the ancient religion of India. Hinduism is a catch-all phrase for the local religions of South Asia, so it is very diverse. At the popular level, Hindus worship and serve the gods of the Hindu pantheon. They visit Hindu temples and offer prayers, food, flowers, and incense to their gods in hopes of gaining protection and benefits. They do not have a personal or familial relationship with their gods like Christians or Jews. There are other Hindus who are much more philosophical, especially among the Brahmins.

What Are Their Needs?

The Chaptegar people need to experience the abundant life offered only by Jesus Christ.

Prayer Points

Pray that they will have hearts and minds open to the only Savior, Jesus Christ. Pray for intercessors and workers to go to them. Pray for a spiritual hunger that will lead them to the empty grave.
