Their name refers to them drawing objects and making toys, something many of them still do. The Chitari live in Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh. In Andhra Pradesh the Chitari speak, read and write in Telugu. In Maharashtra the Chitari speak Konkani and read and write in Devanagari.
The Chitari carve and paint wood items and then sell them. They make use of family welfare opportunities. On the death of the father, sons and unmarried daughters inherit the property. Divorced and bereaved men are allowed to marry again.
Hinduism is their religion.
The Chitrakar people need to accept Christ's offer for "life to the full" resulting in social and spiritual transformation.
Pray that Indian Christian believers will help the Chitari people to begin their own movement to Christ. Pray that gospel materials will become easily available to them. Pray for intercessors and workers. Pray for spiritual openness to the claims of Christ.
