Introduction / History

Little is known about the history of the Bosantiya people. They live in Odisha, a state in eastern India, and speak Odia, the major language of the region. Historical descriptions associate them with dyeing work, especially the use of coloring made from the powder of a red berry. Over time, their occupational identity appears to have shifted largely toward agriculture and village-based livelihoods.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Historically, the Bosantiya worked as dyers, using traditional materials to produce color for practical and commercial purposes. Today, they are primarily known as farmers. Their daily lives are likely shaped by agricultural routines, seasonal labor, household responsibilities, and the social patterns common in rural Odisha.

Community organization includes leadership roles such as a headman and a caste messenger, reflecting traditional systems of local governance and communication. Family and village relationships likely play an important role in decision-making, work, celebrations, and social identity.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Bosantiya people practice Hinduism. Their religious life includes worship of deities within the Hindu pantheon through prayers, rituals, offerings, and temple practices intended to obtain blessing, protection, or spiritual benefit. Hindu beliefs concerning karma, ritual practice, and moksha—freedom from the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth—shape their religious worldview.

Alongside broader Hindu worship, they also venerate village deities such as Kotaru and Chondi. This reflects a blend of mainstream Hindu practice and localized religious devotion centered on community spiritual guardians and traditional village beliefs.

What Are Their Needs?

Although Bible resources are available in Odia through audio, visual, and written formats, the Bosantiya still need meaningful opportunities to hear and understand the gospel of Jesus Christ through personal witness, discipleship, and culturally understandable communication.

They also face practical needs common to agricultural communities, including access to education, healthcare, clean water, and sustainable community support. Their greatest need is to know the love of God, the forgiveness available through Christ, and the hope of new life found only in him.

Prayer Points

Pray that the Bosantiya people will be adopted through the People Group Adoption program so that ongoing prayer, faithful partnership, and future gospel engagement will reach their communities.
Pray that Christians will lovingly and persistently reach out to the Bosantiya people, sharing the message of Jesus Christ in ways that are understandable and relevant.
Pray that a deep spiritual hunger will arise among the Bosantiya people, leading individuals and whole families to seek and follow Jesus Christ no matter what the cost.
Pray for the physical needs of the Bosantiya people, including healthcare, schools, clean water, agricultural support, and strengthened opportunities for families and villages.
