Introduction / History

The Bariki people were once farmers who had adequate land to support themselves. Since that time, they have fallen on hard times. Most have sold their land, and many of these are now day laborers. The Barikis sometimes have to borrow money from money lenders or shop keepers in times of crisis.

Where Are they Located?

The Bariki people live in India's eastern states of Orissa and Andhra Pradesh.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Though they are poor, their social standing is not exceptionally bad considering they are Dalits. They are allowed to use public wells, and Brahmins will perform ceremonies for them. They do not suffer from the stigma of untouchability. They live in nuclear families, though they have contact with their extended families as well.

What Are Their Beliefs?

They follow Hindu rituals and worship Hindu gods. Once a year they worship their ancestors.

What Are Their Needs?

Pray that the Bariki people will soon recognize their need for Jesus Christ as their only God and Savior.
