Introduction / History

The Bantar people of West Bengal and Bihar consider themselves to be Sudras, that is, those from the lowest of the four main sectors of the Hindu pecking order. We don't know for sure, but their name may come from the word "bans" which refers to bamboo. They are most noted for making bamboo goods, but some either fish or make thatched roofing for homes.

The Bantar people allow divorce on the grounds of adultery, barrenness or "maladjustment" by either spouse. Unlike most communities, the Bantars have the father keep the children after a marriage fails.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Bantar people are Hindus who worship family gods. Some of their sacred specialists are from their own community.

Prayer Points

Pray that the Bantar people will hear about Christ and respond to His love.
