The Wandabong are a very small people group living in Papua New Guinea's Madang Province, specifically in the Usino?Bundi District along the Ramu River in the foothills of the Adelbert Range. Their community has preserved a distinct identity through village?based life amid the culturally and linguistically diverse peoples of New Guinea.
They speak the Wandabong language, a Trans–New?Guinea language of the Lower Ramu family. This language is used daily within the community and reflects a long history of localized settlement where families have lived and interacted for generations.
The Wandabong live in small villages nestled along river valleys and forest edges. Life centers around subsistence gardening, with families cultivating root crops, bananas, and other local staples. Fishing from rivers and gathering foods from the forest supplement the community's diet.
Homes are built from materials gathered from the surrounding land, such as wood and palm thatch. Travel is often by footpaths and simple watercraft as formal roads and infrastructure are limited in this region. Access to formal healthcare, secondary education, and larger markets typically requires significant travel to towns or district centers.
Community cooperation and extended family networks play a central role in daily life, as neighbors help one another with gardening, building, and childcare in a setting where services and modern amenities are remote.
Amost all of the Wandabong identify as Christian, though only a smaller portion are considered evangelical believers, indicating that many may not yet have a deeply rooted biblical understanding of the gospel despite professed affiliation. Traditional spiritual beliefs involving unseen forces connected to nature and spiritual influence on daily life may still persist alongside Christian identity for some.
In the Wandabong language, Scripture translation has started but is not yet complete. There are currently no known Bible portions, New Testament, complete Bible, audio Scripture recordings, or gospel media resources in their language. Limited access to God's Word in the language spoken within the community restricts opportunities for consistent engagement with Scripture.
The Wandabong need a clear and faithful presentation of the gospel of Jesus Christ that leads to genuine personal faith and discipleship rooted in Scripture rather than a mixture of beliefs. Where Christianity is present, deeper biblical teaching and discipleship are essential for spiritual growth.
A major need is the completion and distribution of the Bible in the Wandabong language so that individuals and families can engage directly with God's Word in a form they understand.
There is also a need for trained local church leaders who can teach sound doctrine, disciple believers, and help establish strong, biblically grounded church communities.
Practically, improved access to healthcare, education, and transportation would support physical well?being and broaden opportunities for long?term spiritual and community development in this rural region.
Pray that the Wandabong people would come to a clear and saving faith in Jesus Christ.
Pray that those who identify as Christians would grow in biblical understanding and not blend traditional beliefs with Christian teaching.
Pray for the completion and availability of the Bible in the Wandabong language so that the community can engage directly with God's Word.
Pray for faithful local church leaders to be raised up who can teach, disciple, and shepherd others.
Pray that traditional spiritual beliefs would be replaced by confidence in the truth of Scripture.
Pray for improved access to healthcare, education, and transportation to support overall wellbeing.
