The Vunapu are an indigenous people group of Vanuatu living in **Sanma Province on the northwest coast of Espiritu Santo Island. Their community is small, numbering around 1,000 individuals, and their identity is shaped by village life, local custom, and long-standing ties to the land rather than written historical records. Their language, known as Vunapu (also classified under the name Tapesena in some sources), belongs to the Oceanic branch of the Austronesian language family and links them linguistically to other northern Santo peoples.
The Vunapu live in close-knit village communities where daily life is anchored in family cooperation and subsistence living. Small-scale gardening provides staple foods such as root crops and fruits, while fishing and gathering from nearby coastal and forest environments supplement their diet. Their settlements are typically modest and built from locally available materials, with extended families living near one another and sustaining one another through shared labor and mutual support.
Their language is used in everyday conversation within the community, while Bislama — Vanuatu's national creole language — serves as a common language for communication with people from other groups and in broader regional contexts. The natural environment plays a central role, with coastal waters and nearby landscapes shaping how people travel and interact. Limited infrastructure means that access to services like formal healthcare and higher-level education often requires travel to larger towns or centers.
The majority of the Vunapu identify as Christian, and church life plays a significant role in their communities. Many participate in local worship and religious gatherings, with Christian practices woven into everyday life. At the same time, traditional spiritual beliefs connected to ancestors, spiritual forces, and customary ritual life may continue to influence how some individuals perceive spiritual matters. These traditional elements can exist alongside Christian forms of expression, leading to a blended understanding of spiritual life rather than one firmly rooted solely in biblical teaching.
There is currently no confirmed complete Bible translation in the Vunapu language, and portions of Scripture have not yet been published. This limits the community's direct engagement with the full message of God's Word in the language they speak most naturally.
The Vunapu need clear, faithful gospel teaching that fosters genuine spiritual transformation and a deeper understanding of biblical truth. While Christianity is widely practiced in form, many individuals and families need discipleship that moves beyond cultural identification to a personal trust in Jesus Christ.
Another key need is Bible translation and Scripture access in the Vunapu language. Without the complete Word of God available in the language the community uses daily, spiritual growth and discipleship are hindered.
There is also a need for biblically grounded local church leaders who can teach Scripture clearly, disciple believers within their context, and help guide their communities toward maturity in the faith.
Practical challenges also affect daily life. Limited access to healthcare, education, and transportation can hinder both physical well?being and community development. Addressing these needs would support stronger and more resilient village life.
Pray that the Vunapu would come to a clear and saving faith in Jesus Christ, grounded in the truth of scripture.
Pray for Bible translation and Scripture availability in their language so that God's Word becomes accessible and understandable to all.
Pray for the raising up of faithful, Scripture?centered leaders who can teach and disciple others effectively.
Pray that traditional spiritual beliefs would yield to a firm trust in Christ and the truth of God's Word.
Pray for improved access to healthcare, education, and transportation that strengthens their daily lives and supports community growth.
Pray that the gospel would spread deeply through families and villages, bringing lasting transformation among the Vunapu.
