Introduction / History

The Timbe are an indigenous people living in Papua New Guinea, primarily in the mountainous areas of Morobe Province, particularly in the Kabwum District along the Timbe River valley and nearby tributaries. Their communities are part of the diverse cultural landscape of Papua New Guinea, a country known for its many distinct languages and small ethnic groups that developed over long periods of relative geographic isolation.

The Timbe language belongs to the Trans–New Guinea language family, one of the largest language groupings in the region. Within this broader family it is classified in the Finisterre–Huon subgroup. Language plays a central role in maintaining the identity and heritage of the Timbe people, linking present generations with their ancestors and cultural traditions.

Over generations, Timbe communities have maintained village-based social structures and strong connections to their land. Their culture reflects the broader traditions of many highland and foothill peoples of Papua New Guinea, where family ties, shared work, and respect for community leaders form the foundation of daily life.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Timbe communities are generally rural and are often located in mountainous terrain and river valleys. Families depend largely on subsistence agriculture, cultivating garden plots that provide staple foods for the household. Gardening, gathering resources from the surrounding forests, and small-scale animal husbandry help support family life.

Village life is strongly communal. Extended families often live near one another and work together in farming, house building, and community projects. Elders and respected leaders play an important role in guiding decisions, resolving conflicts, and preserving the traditions and knowledge of the people.

Language is central to community identity. The Timbe language continues to be spoken in homes and villages, allowing cultural values, stories, and practical knowledge to be passed from one generation to the next. In interactions with people from other regions, many may also use Tok Pisin, a widely spoken trade language in Papua New Guinea.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christianity is the primary religion among the Timbe people, and churches are present within many communities. Christian gatherings provide opportunities for worship, prayer, and teaching, and church life often plays an important role in the rhythm of village life.

The New Testament has been translated into the Timbe language, and portions of Scripture are available in both written and audio formats. Access to the Word of God in the language of the people helps believers understand biblical teaching more clearly and supports discipleship within the church. Alongside Christian faith, some put their faith in local spirits.

What Are Their Needs?

Although Christianity is widely present among the Timbe, continued discipleship and biblical teaching remain important. Churches benefit from leaders who are equipped to teach Scripture faithfully and guide believers toward spiritual maturity.

Resources that help families engage with the Bible in the Timbe language can encourage deeper understanding of God's Word. Audio Scriptures, teaching materials, and opportunities for leadership training can strengthen churches and support the growth of healthy Christian communities.

As believers grow in their faith, there is also opportunity for the Timbe church to share the message of Jesus Christ with neighboring communities throughout the surrounding mountain regions.

Prayer Points

Pray that Timbe believers will grow in their understanding of Scripture and in a faithful relationship with Jesus Christ.
Pray for pastors and church leaders who will guide their communities with wisdom and biblical truth.
Pray that the Timbe New Testament will be widely read, heard, distributed, understood, and obeyed in homes and churches.

Pray that the churches among the Timbe will develop a growing vision to share the gospel with neighboring peoples.
