Introduction / History

Longto is the name of the language used by the Longmo people group. They are in Poli Subdivision about one hour West of Poli by road. There are seventeen villages stretching for twenty-five kilometers along a road running north to south. They have also been known by the name Voko, still carried by the main town of the Longto people, which they refer to as Gormaya.
Though they have their own primary language, Longto, the greater part of the population speaks Fulfulde as a secondary language.

What Are Their Lives Like?

There are two schools, a clinic, and a police station in Voko. No language development has been initiated, except for a Longto-French dictionary written twenty-five years ago, but nowhere to be found. They do, however, organize fund-raising for community projects on a regular basis. The climate is hot and dry, and the terrain mostly plains. The geography increases in elevation toward Poli, with mountains and some rocky areas. Vegetation is primarily savannah and scrub trees. Everything turns a beautiful green during the rainy season.

What Are Their Beliefs?

All of them claim to be Muslim. There is one church, a Lutheran church in Voko, none of whose members belong to the language group. Only outsiders, civil servants, attend the services.

What Are Their Needs?

Only a limited few have any comprehension of French, even though it is the language of the school system. Some of the young people are beginning to make French their second language rather than Fulfulde. Arabic is used for prayers and for instruction in the Koranic schools.

Prayer Points

Pray for a hunger for Christ among the Longa people.
Pray for the Lord to thrust out dedicated workers to them.
Pray for Longa disciples to make more disciples.
