Introduction / History

The Southwest Tana are an indigenous Melanesian people living on the southwest of Tanna Island in Vanuatu. They descend from early settlers who maintained strong kastom (traditional ways) despite missionary influence and colonial contact. Christianity spread in the 19th–20th centuries, blending with older beliefs rather than fully replacing them.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life is largely rural and based on subsistence farming, fishing, and small gardens. Villages are organized around extended families, with elders guiding decisions. Marriage is important, often involving exchanges between families. Food includes root crops, fruits, pigs, and fish. Community life centers on ceremonies, kava gatherings, and seasonal celebrations reflecting both Christian and kastom traditions.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most identify as Christian, but beliefs often mix with traditional religion. Ancestor spirits, sacred places, and concepts like mana remain influential. Movements such as John Frum reflect syncretism between Christianity and local expectations of spiritual power and blessing.

What Are Their Needs?

Greater access to clear biblical teaching would help strengthen faith beyond syncretism. Leadership training could equip local believers to disciple others. Economic challenges and isolation limit education and healthcare opportunities. Scripture resources in heart language and consistent pastoral support would deepen spiritual growth.
