The Pasismanua (AKA, Kowlong) in Papua New Guinea are an indigenous people of the West New Britain Province, particularly in the Kandrian district in the southwestern part of the island of New Britain. Their identity is closely tied to their language and the forested inland environment where they have lived for generations. Like many groups in this region, their history is preserved through oral tradition, family lineage, and community memory rather than written accounts.
They are part of the broader cultural and linguistic landscape of Papua New Guinea, one of the most diverse regions in the world, where many small communities maintain distinct identities through language and local customs.
The Kowlong people live in rural and often remote inland areas where daily life is closely connected to the land. Most families depend on subsistence agriculture, cultivating gardens and growing staple crops for their own use. Hunting, gathering, and small-scale trade also contribute to sustaining their households.
Community life centers around extended families and village cooperation. Work, food production, and social responsibilities are often shared, and elders or respected leaders play a key role in guiding decisions and maintaining order.
Their primary language is Kaulong, also known as Pasismanua or Kowlong, which is an Austronesian language used in everyday communication and cultural expression. Tok Pisin is also commonly used for broader interaction with other groups.
The Kowlong are identified primarily with Christianity, and Christian belief has a strong presence in community life. Churches and Christian fellowship play an important role in shaping moral values, relationships, and social structure.
A smaller number of individuals may retain elements of traditional cultural understanding about the spiritual world. These perspectives are generally expressed in simple cultural terms and reflect long-standing awareness of spiritual realities.
The gospel has clearly taken root among the Kowlong, yet there remains an ongoing need for deeper understanding of Scripture and consistent application of biblical truth in daily life.
The Kowlong would benefit from continued discipleship and strong biblical teaching that helps believers grow in spiritual maturity. While Christianity is widespread, there is still a need for deeper engagement with Scripture and clearer understanding of the gospel.
The New Testament and portions of Scripture are available in the Kaulong language, which provides an important foundation for personal and community growth in God's word. Continued use of these resources, along with teaching and discipleship, will help strengthen faith.
There is also a need for faithful, biblically grounded leaders who can guide the church with wisdom and clarity. Strengthening families, encouraging Scripture engagement, and fostering Christ-centered living will support long-term spiritual health.
Pray that believers among the Kowlong in Papua New Guinea will grow in their understanding of Scripture and live faithfully according to God's word.
Pray for deeper engagement with the Bible in the Kaulong language and for a hunger to know and apply its truth.
Pray for strong and faithful church leaders who will teach clearly and shepherd their communities well.
Pray that families will be strengthened in Christ-centered living and that the gospel will shape everyday life.
Pray that the Kowlong church will have a vision to share the hope of Jesus Christ with neighboring peoples.
