Onjob in Papua New Guinea

Introduction / History

The Onjob are a small people group of Oro Province in southeastern Papua New Guinea, in the Tufi area inland south of Cape Nelson. They are associated with Koreat and Naukwate villages in the Tufi Rural local-level government area, placing them in a remote part of the Papuan Peninsula where village communities have long been shaped by rugged terrain, forest, and relative isolation from larger centers.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Onjob live in a small inland village setting in Oro Province where ordinary life is best understood as centered on subsistence gardening, forest resources, and close kinship-based village life. In the Tufi and Cape Nelson hinterland, communities are often linked more by footpaths and local tracks than by major roads, and daily rhythms typically revolve around garden work, food gathering, family obligations, and cooperation within a tight local community. Because public ethnographic material specific to the Onjob is limited, it is safest to place them within this broader Oro interior village context rather than claim narrow details that are not well documented. Their language in ordinary life is Onjob, though outside sources note that many also understand Ubir, and some use Tok Pisin and English in wider contact settings.

What Are Their Needs?

The Onjob need strong biblical discipleship so that a strong Christian identity is matched by genuine repentance, biblical conviction, and obedience to Christ. Because Christianity is widely present but Scripture work in Onjob itself appears limited and early, they need healthy churches, faithful shepherds, and clear gospel teaching that leads beyond nominal Christianity into mature faith.
