Introduction / History

The Big Nambas are an indigenous Melanesian people living in northwest Malekula, Vanuatu, speaking V'enen Taut. Their name comes from the large traditional penis sheaths ("nambas") worn by men. They have long lived in small inland villages, preserving strong kastom traditions while later encountering European explorers and 19th–20th century missionaries who introduced Christianity.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life is village-based, centered on gardening, fishing, and raising pigs. Families are extended and community-oriented, with men's meeting houses (nakamal) guiding leadership and decision-making. Ceremonies include kava drinking, dances, and rites of passage. Diets commonly include root crops, fish, fruits, and coconut-based dishes. Traditional customs still shape daily life alongside modern influences.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most identify as Protestant Christians, reflecting missionary influence and Bible translation efforts. However, elements of traditional animistic belief remain, including respect for ancestral spirits, mana, and taboos, often blending with Christian practice.

What Are Their Needs?

Greater depth of biblical understanding would strengthen believers to move from nominal faith to active discipleship. Leadership development is important so local churches can disciple their own communities effectively. Access to Scripture in heart language can still grow in usage and understanding. Economic stability and education opportunities would help communities thrive while maintaining cultural identity.
