Introduction / History

The Mungbam, or Abar, people live in three small villages in a remote part of the North West Province of Cameroon. It is very difficult to access, as roads are not well maintained, and it is in a mountainous region. In fact, only one of the villages is accessible by road, the remainder accessible on foot.

The majority of Abar people are farmers, growing corn, manioc, peanuts, and beans. They are generally very aware of the spiritual world around them and perform animal sacrifices at the request of traditional priests, to make peace with their ancestors and assure that what they plant will be blessed and bring forth a harvest.

Only a few Abar attend church and even fewer have a personal relationship with Jesus as their only personal Savior. Of those that claim to be Christian, there is often syncretism with the local traditional religion (sacrifices and many everyday actions that show their enslavement through fear of the spirits and the power that others may have over them). They justify their ancestor worship by saying that they are 'honoring their parents ', just as the Bible says. Pray that they would understand that God is a jealous God and He does not accept divided loyalties. Presently they have no Scripture in their language. This lack of Scripture has lead to many false teachings and only the few who are literate in English can verify from the English Bible. Pray that the Word of God would penetrate deep and that God would speak to them, finally, in their heart language, through the translated Scriptures.
