The Merelava?Merig are an indigenous people group of Vanuatu living on and between two small islands in the Banks Islands of Torba Province: Merelava Island and nearby Merig Island. These islands are part of the northernmost province of Vanuatu, a region known for its strong community ties, island navigation traditions, and localized languages and customs. The people's history is preserved through oral tradition, village memory, and long?standing ties to land and sea rather than written records. Their languages belong to the Oceanic branch of the Austronesian language family, reflecting deep cultural connections with neighboring island groups across the Banks and Torres archipelago.
The Merelava?Merig live in small, close?knit village communities where daily life revolves around family relationships, subsistence food production, and cooperation within the community. Gardens provide staple foods such as taro, yam, cassava, and bananas, while fishing and gathering from coastal waters supplement the diet. The sea is central not only for food but also for travel and connection between the two islands and to nearby communities.
Homes are built from locally available materials, and extended families often live near one another, reinforcing strong social bonds. Their language is used in everyday life, while Bislama, Vanuatu's common language, is used for wider communication with outsiders or in regional contexts. Infrastructure such as healthcare services, secondary schools, and formal employment opportunities are limited locally, and travel to larger islands for such services typically requires boat transport and favorable weather.
Most Merelava?Merig people identify with Christianity, and church life plays a significant role in community gatherings and spiritual life. However, traditional beliefs connected to ancestors, spiritual forces, and customary practices remain present for some and can influence how people understand spiritual matters. These traditional elements often coexist with Christian practices rather than being fully replaced by them, resulting in a spiritual landscape that blends customary expressions with Christian forms.
There is no confirmed complete Bible translation in the Merelava or Merig languages, and only limited Scripture portions are available. This restricts consistent and deep engagement with the full message of God's Word in the language the community uses most in daily life.
The Merelava?Merig need clear, faithful teaching of the gospel that leads to genuine, personal faith in Jesus Christ rather than a surface or cultural form of Christianity. Deeper discipleship rooted in Scripture is essential for spiritual maturity and transformation within the community.
A significant need is Bible translation and Scripture access in the languages they speak. Greater availability of God's Word in their everyday language would support discipleship, strengthen believers, and help establish a firm biblical foundation.
There is also a need for biblically grounded local leaders who can teach Scripture clearly, disciple others in context, and guide their communities in living out the gospel.
Practical challenges affect everyday life as well. Limited access to healthcare, education, and reliable transportation can hinder both physical well?being and opportunities for consistent church growth and community development.
Pray that the Merelava?Merig would come to a clear and saving faith in Jesus Christ, firmly grounded in Scripture rather than cultural or mixed religious practices.
Pray for Bible translation efforts and Scripture distribution in their languages so that God's Word becomes accessible and understandable to all in the language they use daily.
Pray for the raising up of faithful, Scripture?centered local leaders who can teach, disciple, and shepherd others effectively.
Pray that traditional spiritual beliefs would yield to a deep trust in the truth of God's Word.
Pray for improved access to healthcare, education, and transportation that supports daily life and community growth.
Pray that the gospel would spread throughout homes and villages, bringing lasting transformation.
