Introduction / History

The Mele-Fila are a Polynesian outlier people living on Efate Island and nearby Ifira. Their language, Mele-Fila, is part of the Austronesian family and reflects migration from central Polynesia (Tonga/Samoa) within the last two millennia. Their communities remain centered in Mele village and Ifira, maintaining a distinct Polynesian identity within Melanesian Vanuatu.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life is coastal and community-oriented, with fishing, small-scale agriculture, and tourism-related work common. Extended families are central, and respect for elders shapes daily life. Celebrations include communal feasts with foods such as fish, root crops, and coconut dishes. Village life is closely knit, and bilingualism (local language plus Bislama/English/French) is common.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most identify as Christian, with church life influential and Scripture portions and the New Testament available in their language. However, elements of traditional beliefs and practices persist alongside Christianity.

What Are Their Needs?

Greater biblical depth and discipleship would strengthen nominal Christianity into active faith. Leadership training could help local believers guide their communities effectively. Economic pressures and cultural change create challenges that require holistic support.
