Introduction / History

The Isongo Mbati are an indigenous people of the forested regions of southern Central African Republic, also known simply as Mbati or Isongo. Their history reflects centuries of small-scale farming, trade, and migration shaped by forest ecology and regional conflicts. Over time, outside influences, including colonial rule and modern state formation, have altered settlement patterns while many traditional structures remain.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most families depend on subsistence farming, growing cassava, plantains, maize, and groundnuts, supplemented by hunting, fishing, and small market trade. Extended families live close together, sharing labor and childcare. Community celebrations mark harvests, births, marriages, and funerals with music, dance, and storytelling. Daily meals center on cassava, leafy stews, smoked fish, and seasonal fruits.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Traditional animistic beliefs remain strong, emphasizing ancestral spirits, protective rituals, and harmony with nature. A growing minority identifies as Christian, yet many blend Christian practices with traditional worldview elements.

What Are Their Needs?

Limited access to healthcare, clean water, education, and stable markets contributes to preventable disease, poverty, and food insecurity. Insecurity and poor infrastructure restrict travel, trade, and consistent schooling, deepening isolation and vulnerability.

Prayer Points

Pray for spiritual openness and deep discipleship, for healing from preventable illness, for provision of clean water and food security, and for peace, education, and economic stability so families can flourish. Pray for a faithful translation and wide distribution of the Scriptures, evangelism materials, and discipleship resources in the Mbati language. Pray that the Mbati Christians would lead their communities for God's glory, preach the Gospel, teach the Bible, plant churches, and make disciples of their own nation and beyond.
