Introduction / History

The Ataripoe Malo are an indigenous Ni-Vanuatu people found only in Vanuatu, speaking the Malo language and belonging to the wider Pacific Islander cultural cluster. Their history reflects Melanesian roots shaped by later missionary contact that introduced Christianity across the islands.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life is village-based, centered on gardening, fishing, and small-scale agriculture typical of island societies. Extended families share strong communal ties, with respect for elders and chiefs. Celebrations include weddings, funerals, and Christian holidays, often marked by singing, dancing, and shared meals such as root crops, fish, and coconut dishes.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Most identify as Protestant Christians, with Scripture resources available in their language. As in wider Vanuatu, Christian practice may blend with traditional beliefs in ancestral spirits, ceremonies, and customary practices ("kastom").

What Are Their Needs?

Stronger discipleship and biblical teaching would help deepen faith beyond nominal Christianity. Greater access to Christian media and leadership training could strengthen local churches. Economic development, education, and resilience to natural disasters would improve overall well-being.
