Introduction / History

The Siasi Lokep in PNG are an indigenous people group living in the East Sepik Province of Papua New Guinea, particularly in areas near coastal plains and lower river valleys along the northern coast. Their communities have long lived in a tropical environment where river systems, flatlands, and swamps shape daily life and local identity.

They speak the Arop-Lokep language, which is part of the Trans–New Guinea family within the Ndu language group, a linguistically rich and distinctive set of languages found along the Sepik River basin. This linguistic heritage reflects deep historical connections among neighboring groups, even as the Siasi Lokep retain their own unique identity and traditions.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life among the Siasi Lokep revolves around small village communities where extended family and clan relationships form the backbone of society. Cooperation within families and across the community is essential for gardening, fishing, building homes, and mutual support.

Most people depend on subsistence agriculture, cultivating staple crops suited to the tropical lowland environment. Rivers and nearby swamps provide fish and other food sources that supplement gardens. Materials from the forest and riverine areas are used for building and daily tools.

The village communities are tightly knit, and daily routines often involve shared work and social gatherings. Multilingualism is common, and while the Lokep language (used by the Siasi Lokep) is central within their community, broader communication with other groups often involves trade languages such as Tok Pisin.

What Are Their Beliefs?

The Siasi Lokep are largely identified with Christianity, and Christian teaching has a meaningful presence in their families and communities. Church gatherings and worship play important roles in shaping values and providing spaces for instruction and fellowship. Many also put their faith in local spirits, highlighting the need for discipleship and Bible translation. Portions of Scripture, including the New Testament, are available in the Lokep language, providing access to foundational biblical texts in a language people can understand.

What Are Their Needs?

Equipping local leaders with sound biblical understanding is essential so that pastors and teachers can guide their communities with wisdom and truth. Strong leadership supports both spiritual growth and practical community life.

Because many Siasi Lokep communities are located in rural settings with limited infrastructure, practical challenges such as access to education, transportation, and resources can affect both daily living and ministry development. Addressing both spiritual and practical needs helps support long?term growth and well?being.
