Introduction / History

Livonian people are a Baltic Finnic group once speaking the extinct Livonian language, which is now in the process of being revitalized. They have replaced the Baltic natives in prehistoric times with the Finno-Ugric migrations and have been living in Latvia and South Estonia ever since. Their closest ethnolinguistic relatives are Estonians and Finns. Their numbers have dwindled throughout the centuries, primarily assimilating into Latgalians and Latvians, as well as Germans. Now, only a small number of Livonians remain, most of whom speak Latvian.

Most Livonians live in Latvia. Small numbers of Livonian people are dispersed in other countries of the former Soviet Union, primarily among other Baltic nations.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Most Livonians live lives indistinguishable from their Latvian neighbors nowadays, even though they have traditionally been small-scale fishers and hunters. Some still continue to live in the same way, whereas others now live in villages working in Latvian industries.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Livonians are traditionally Protestant, in line with other citizens of Latvia.

What Are Their Needs?

Like all other peoples, the Livonians need their hearts revived and refreshed by the Holy Spirit.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Livonians to hunger for truth and righteousness more than anything else.
Pray for them to have gratitude for the God who gave them life.
