The Kpe, also known as Baakpe or closely associated with the larger Bakweri cluster of coastal Bantu peoples, are an ethnic community in the Southwest Region of Cameroon. They live primarily on and around the slopes of Mount Cameroon and in surrounding lowland areas where forests, fertile soils, and waterways support village life and traditional settlement patterns. These communities have long existed within the complex cultural tapestry of Cameroon's coastal peoples.
The Kpe speak the Mokpwe language, a Bantu language within the Sawabantu group. The language serves as a central marker of identity and is used in daily communication, oral history, and community interaction. Linguistic evidence and historical records reflect the long presence of Mokpwe-speaking peoples across the coastal plains and highlands of the region.
Historically, traditional leadership and clan structures guided local life, with elders and community leaders playing roles in dispute resolution, land use, and cultural ceremonies. These social institutions have adapted over time alongside broader civic developments within Cameroon.
Most Kpe families live in rural and semi-urban villages within subdivisions such as Muyuka, Tiko, Buea, and Limbe. Daily life is closely tied to the land, and agriculture plays an important role in supporting household needs. Villagers grow crops suited to the fertile soils of the Mount Cameroon region, and community cooperation is common in planting and harvesting activities.
Language remains a central part of social life. The Mokpwe language is used in homes, local markets, and gatherings, helping preserve cultural knowledge, stories, and shared values. Many people also interact with other languages in the region, including Pidgin English and Standard English, especially among younger generations and those involved in trade or education.
Community life includes family gatherings, village ceremonies, and seasonal events that strengthen social bonds. Crafts, small-scale trade, and artisanal work complement agricultural livelihoods and provide opportunities for economic exchange within and between communities.
Many Kpe people identify with Christianity, and churches are active within their communities. Christian worship, teaching, and fellowship shape the spiritual lives of many families and influence moral values and community engagement.
Traditional spiritual perspectives have also been present historically. These cultural beliefs often included respect for ancestors, community rites, and recognition of spiritual forces connected with the natural world and social life. Such traditions form part of the broader cultural heritage of the region, though they do not dominate the religious identity of most people today.
Scripture is available in the Mokpwe language, including the New Testament. Access to Scripture in a language familiar to many community members allows believers to read and hear the teachings of the Bible in ways that connect with their language and cultural context.
Believers among the Kpe benefit from opportunities to deepen their understanding of Scripture and grow in mature Christian faith. Teaching and discipleship that connect biblical truth with daily life can strengthen individuals, families, and congregations.
Local churches also benefit from leadership development and encouragement for pastors and Christian workers who serve the community. Support and training can help leaders guide congregations with wisdom and faithfulness.
Continued access to Scripture resources and teaching materials in the Mokpwe language can help believers grow in faith and confidence, encouraging them to share the message of Christ with others within their communities and beyond.
Pray that believers among the Kpe will grow in their understanding of Scripture and develop strong, Christ-centered faith.
Pray for pastors, teachers, and church leaders to have wisdom, humility, and spiritual strength as they serve their congregations.
Pray for families and communities to experience peace, unity, and spiritual renewal through the message of Christ.
Pray that scripture resources in the Mokpwe language will continue to strengthen discipleship and faith.
Pray that Kpe believers will have a vision to share the love of Christ with neighboring peoples and future generations.
