Introduction / History
The Kono people have no Scripture in their primary language of Kono. The Kono live in their Kono village in Lere LGA (Local Government Area) in Kaduna State, Nigeria.
What Are Their Lives Like?
Agriculture is the major occupation of the Kono people. They raise livestock and grow maize, rice, beans, corns, guinea corn and millet. Cotton and peanuts are common cash crops. Some work as civil servants.
What Are Their Beliefs?
Christianity was introduced to the area by SIM around 1935. Now nearly two-thirds identify as Christians. Their faith is sometimes mixed with elements of African Traditional Religion – some understand that natural physical entities such as animals, plants, and even inanimate objects possess a spiritual essence. Pentecostal denominations are growing strongly in this area.
What Are Their Needs?
Insufficient data has been collected, but most likely the Kono language is used as the first language by all in this ethnic community. Hausa and English are more widely used in education and business, and we don’t know if they teach Kano in local schools. Survey work needs to be conducted to assess the multilingualism of the people and in what domains Kono, English, Hausa and neighboring languages are being used.
